Fairfax schools to receive educational kits in preparation for Remembrance Day

Local News

Ted O’Brien MP said schools in Fairfax would receive an educational kit in preparation for Remembrance Day on 11 November.

Mr O’Brien said the educational kit, developed by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), would help schools plan educational and commemorative Remembrance Day activities.

“Our Fairfax community continues to honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our nation,” Mr O’Brien said.

“As a community it is essential that each generation learns about that sacrifice and understands how Australia’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations have shaped this country.

“The educational kit will include a Remembrance Day commemorative poster, the 2018 DVA calendar, an educational resource and flyers promoting new online publications about Australian peacekeeping and the 2018 Anzac Day Schools’ Awards.

“This year’s Remembrance Day poster will honour the significant contribution of Australian Peacekeepers over the last 70 years, highlighting the work they have done in countries such as Cambodia, Somalia and East Timor.

“A key part of this year’s educational resource is the sixth instalment in the Century of Service series. Comradeship: Stories of friendship and recreation in wartime explores the stories of Australians finding joy and laughter in simple pleasures, like sport and music, amongst the horrors of war.”

Schools will receive the educational kit this month (October) with resources also available to download via the DVA Anzac Portal.
