Future mix of the energy sector

Despite the almighty challenges that our nation faces, there also does lie an opportunity, an opportunity for us to rebuild an even stronger and more resilient economy than what we previously had. This is going to be a long road, and government, here in this chamber included, has an important leadership role to play, but it’s really going to be Australian businesses that get us back on our feet. They need to be at the centre of our recovery efforts. We need to do what we can to ensure that we incentivise them to unleash their animal spirits, to invent, to invest, to hire, and to do what they do best. But we also have our own jobs to do, and that is to be equally as savvy as the private sector is when it comes to those areas we influence. One of those areas is the energy sector, where we need to be forward-leaning in our embrace of technology—of all technologies, not just one. But included in the mix that should at least be considered are the new and emerging nuclear technologies.
