MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX

MEDIA RELEASE

Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien, has officially launched the 2025 IFYS Christmas Drive, donating toys and groceries from his office to mark the start of this year’s appeal and urging Sunshine Coast locals to get behind families who are struggling through the rising cost of living.

Mr O’Brien joined frontline staff at the IFYS headquarters in Maroochydore today, to help launch the Christmas Appeal and highlight the increasing demand for support across the region.

Mr O’Brien said families are being pushed to the limit.

“Every week I hear from locals who are working harder than ever just to survive. Food, rent, utilities and insurance have all climbed sharply, and for many families there will be nothing left over at Christmas,” Mr O’Brien said.

“IFYS is seeing more people than ever turning to them for help. Their Christmas Appeal provides hope, dignity and practical support to children and families who are really doing it tough. Every contribution, big or small, goes directly to a local family.”

“I’m proud to partner once again with the dedicated team at IFYS to do what I can to support their fantastic work helping local families in their time of need.”

IFYS, which has supported Sunshine Coast families for 45 years, says this year’s need is among the highest they have seen.

Mr Tim Eyre, IFYS Manager, said the appeal delivers support exactly where it is needed.

“The IFYS Christmas Appeal provides gifts, essentials and emotional support to families who are doing it tough. Every donation stays local and goes directly to a Sunshine Coast family. Our Christmas Options Guide outlines exactly what people can donate age appropriate gifts, vouchers and practical items that really make a difference,” Mr Eyre said.

He said cost of living pressures are hitting families hard.

“In 2025 we are seeing more families than ever struggling with cost of living pressures. Many parents are having to choose between paying bills, covering rent or buying a gift for their children. Christmas can be particularly hard for children who are already coping with instability or hardship, but our community has the power to change that.”

Mr Eyre encouraged locals to donate however they can.

“If anyone wants to support the appeal, they can simply go to ifys.com.au and follow the Christmas Appeal link. Whether it is a small toy for a child, a voucher for a teenager or a food item for a Christmas hamper, every contribution helps rebuild hope for local families.”

Mr O’Brien said community generosity can make a meaningful difference.

“There is no greater time for community spirit than Christmas. A small toy, a supermarket voucher or a festive food item can mean the world to a child or family who are struggling. Every donation helps make Christmas brighter for someone in our own backyard.”

Unwrapped gifts can be delivered to IFYS at 37 Dalton Dr, Maroochydore or at Mr O’Brien’s electorate office at 17 Southern Drive, Maroochydore by Friday 12 December. Donations can also be made via the IFYS website.
