Sunshine Coast men now have a new place to socialise and keep busy following the construction of a new home for the Buderim Men’s Shed.
Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said that until now the Buderim Men’s Shed had been operating from temporary accommodation, which was generously provided by members of the community.
“Now the shedders have a permanent headquarters to operate from, complete with two large workshop areas, an administrative and recreation building and a 56-bay car park,” Mr O’Brien said.
Officially opening the Buderim Men’s Shed, Assistant Minister for Roads and Transport Scott Buchholz said the Liberal and Nationals Government’s $1 million contribution to the Buderim Men’s Shed is an investment in the economic vitality of the region.
“In addition to drawing upon local suppliers and workers and supporting 40 jobs during the construction phase, the new shed will be an important hub for community inclusiveness and will be increasingly used by other community groups,” Mr Buchholz said.
“It’s only due to our Government’s strong economic management that we are able to make significant investments like these in local communities across Fairfax.”
Mr O’Brien said Buderim Men’s Shed is one of the largest in Australia and will provide for a huge variety of activities.
“Activities include woodwork, woodturning, toy making, metalwork, leatherwork and French polishing, with many of their finished products put to use in our community,” Mr O’Brien said.
“There are also computer classes, health and fitness activities and even art and sketch classes, so it is clear there will be something for everybody in the area.
“Most importantly, Men’s sheds are vital community institutions where men can share in education and discuss mental and health issues in a relaxed and supportive environment.
“In addition to creating a safe space for the shedders, the new workspaces will enable them to use their skills to contribute to the broader community.
“The new shed will also help cater for members with disabilities who were unable to make full use of the previous venue, making Buderim that much more inclusive,” Mr O’Brien said.
President of the Buderim Men’s Shed, Mr Barry Cheales, said the new Shed will benefit members through providing an opportunity for renewal and transformation, surrounded by creative activity.
“Not only will the Shed enable members to positively advance their health and well-being, it also has a positive flow on effect within member’s family life because they are happier for being involved with the Shed,” Mr Cheales said.
Mr O’Brien said he’s proud to have delivered this significant funding for such an important community centre.
“It follows significant funding of Men’s Sheds across the region including $450,000 for new facilities at Maroochydore, $84,000 to build a second shed at Coolum and $90,000 for new amenities at Sunshine Valley.”
