SHADOW TREASURER APPOINTMENT

MEDIA STATEMENT

28/05/2025

To be elected Deputy Leader of the Opposition and entrusted to serve as Shadow Treasurer is a great honour.

It is a responsibility that I take very seriously and I will apply myself wholeheartedly.

Amidst heightened global uncertainty, there is nothing more important for Australia than building a strong economy.

A strong economy is not the end game, but the means by which:

  • Australians can have the opportunity to aspire for a better future for themselves and their family;
  • Local communities can thrive, small businesses can grow and new businesses can get started;
  • Vital public services can be provided, hospitals and schools can be built, and doctors, nurses, emergency service workers and teachers can keep people healthy, safe, educated and well informed;
  • Roads, rail and airports can be maintained and new ones built; and
  • Our nation can be kept safe and our borders secure.

A strong economy is when the government is working for you, rather than you feeling like you are working for it.

Only with a strong economy can we bequeath future generations a nation which is prosperous, strong and fiercely independent, and one where individuals, families, communities, enterprises and entrepreneurs have the freedom and opportunity to aspire for greatness.

Over recent history, the Coalition has governed for more than 50 of the past 75 years – helping shape Australia into the greatest liberal democracy on earth, built on the foundation of a strong economy. That record is a source of immense pride and a reminder of the importance of good government, sound policy, and responsible leadership.

As Sussan Ley says, we will meet Australians where they are – respecting, reflecting and representing modern Australia.

As Deputy Leader and Shadow Treasurer, I look forward to working with all my colleagues towards a values-led, future-focused and economically-driven agenda, anchored to a positive vision for Australia’s future.

I will bring to bear in this role the discipline, work ethic, and commercial expertise which I gained in over 20 years in business prior to entering parliament, along with my training in commerce and economics.
