As well as buying local this Christmas, I’m supporting the Go Country For Christmas initiative to support those business impacted by the devastating Australian drought.
Launched by Liberal Party Senator for NSW, Sen Hollie Hughes in October, the initiative encourages fellow Australians to support our rural and regional communities by purchasing their Christmas presents from a business based in the country. As she said at the launch, ‘“The internet allows us to purchase our presents from anywhere so we don’t need to buy from the usual suspects, just go to www.gocountryforchristmas.com.au and get the same thing you had in mind but by doing it this way, you are supporting regional economies.
“These businesses mainly exist because of the agriculture around them and when drought is devastating the land, we need to think laterally about other ways to support rural and regional economies and this is a very effective way to do that.”
“I’m very grateful to my colleagues who have enabled this bipartisan website that gives the consumer a very easy and accessible mechanism to buy their Christmas presents from the thousands of country businesses that have registered on the site.”
