Family budgets are set to worsen following a desperate deal between the Albanese Labor Government and the Greens which will see the world’s most punitive carbon tax adopted in Australia. The backroom deal follows months of chaos in Parliament over the Government’s rushed reforms to the Safeguard Mechanism which will heap enormous new costs onto Australian businesses already struggling to afford skyrocketing energy bills. This policy represents another broken promise that would inflict further pain on households amidst a cost-of-living crisis. The Albanese-Bandt deal comes as Australian industries including steel, aluminium and cement publicly grapple with details of the reform which threatens to permanently offshore production to higher emitting countries like China and India.
